SATISH GUJRAL: THE MODERNIST AND HIS MANY WORLDS

Satish Gujral's artistic practice was defined by a refusal to remain within the boundaries of a single medium. From painting and sculpture to murals, design and architecture, he moved between forms with a rare sense of curiosity and conviction. That same instinct is on view at this edition of ART MUMBAI, where a Gujral sculpture stands in the park, offering a physical manifestation of the breadth of a renaissance artist.

Celebrating Satish Gujral's centenary retrospective at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai, this conversation reflects on the artist's extraordinary body of work and places it within the larger story of Indian modernism. Fittingly held at a fair built on championing South Asian art and expanding its market and discourse, the conversation also turns to The Gujral Foundation, which has spent the past 16 years nurturing talent across art, architecture, culture and design across the Indian subcontinent and beyond. Its work across major national and international platforms reflects a sustained commitment to deepening those discourses further.

At a moment when contemporary art is increasingly fluid across geographies and disciplines, the conversation will examine what the modernists continue to offer us. Why does their work remain important to revisit today? What can their experimentation and ambition offer a new generation? And how might Satish Gujral's expansive approach speak to the directions contemporary art is taking? The event is supported by Avid Learning.
