She recently gave a TEDx talk on dance and classical ballet in India. In 2018, Pia founded the “Institute of Classical and Modern Dance” to fill the deep void that existed for vocational training for young dancers in India. As a result, Pia’s vision is to make vocational training in dance accessible to young artists. Moreover, to make Ballet, an otherwise elitist art form, to be within the grasp of anyone who wants to pursue it. The school has successfully sent students on scholarships to top performing arts Institutions in Europe, the UK, and USA.
The “Institute of Classical and Modern Dance” was founded by Pia Sutaria to fill the void of a vocational education for young and passionate dancers and performers in India, by bridging the gap between hobby classes and a vocational education. We focus on mentoring students to apply to full time and part time performing arts programs and conservatories around the world, and equip them with the necessary training to be able to attend such programs. The school is designed to develop the technical ability of a young dancer as they study both Western and Indian Classical dance forms, appear for a graded certificate examination of the Royal Academy of Dance, also providing training and performance opportunities to young dancers by connecting them to industry professionals, both in India and Internationally. As an educational institute, we provide students with consistent, intensive, goal-oriented training in Classical Ballet, Kathak, Modern Dance, Jazz technique and supplementary training in theory, dance history, anatomy and Creative practice. Since ICMD's inception in 2018, our students have been accepted into renowned international performing arts schools like NYU Tisch, The Juilliard School, the Rambert School, Paris Marais Dance School, Alvin Ailey, Joffrey Ballet, ArtsEd London, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, and many more. In the past year, ICMD students have been invited to work on and perform at two of India’s most prestigious theatres, the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Center and National Center for Performing Arts as well as for a diverse range of professional projects. ICMD also recently were invited to perform in London, England at the Royal Academy of Dance Headquarters and at The Place, with the Center for Advanced Training UK.
