About the Programme

Join ART MUMBAI for a tour of the iconic art collection of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), led by Art and Wonderment.

The art collection of TIFR is one the earliest and most important collections of modern Indian art. The process of acquisition was initiated and nurtured by Homi Jehangir Bhabha, founding director of TIFR and one of the foremost scientific institution-builders of the post-Independence India. Bhabha took advantage of the government's initiative to spend a small percentage of the total funds assigned to new government buildings for artistic enrichment.

The tour offers the opportunity to walk through the corridors and rooms of the institute to view some remarkable art from the second half of the twentieth century. The collection includes rare, unseen works by M.F. Husain, S.K. Bakre, S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, K.H. Ara, H.A. Gade, V.S. Gaitonde, Krishen Khanna, Nalini Malani, Anjolie Ela Menon and Sakti Burman.

Art & Wonderment

Art & Wonderment, co-founded by Alisha Sadikot and Nishita Zachariah, aims to broaden, and deepen, art conversations in the city. Their walks foster new ways of seeing, sharing, and thinking about the art on view in Mumbai. With over 10 years of experience working together to build public audiences for art, they design and lead experiences for absolutely everyone. Most recently they were the official walks partners for St+art India's Mumbai Urban Art Festival (2022-23), Mumbai Gallery Weekend (2023) as well as Art Mumbai (2023). In early 2023 they also independently curated walks around Fort Kochi to coincide with the Biennale. They were excited to begin 2024 as the official walks partner for the 2024 Mumbai Gallery Weekend and the second edition of the Indian Ceramics Triennale in Delhi.
